Remote Hub Lab

Redtail

Redtail is an NSF-funded project of the Remote Hub Lab that provides a freely accessible repository of simulations and digital twins connected to real remote laboratory hardware. Its goal is to expand equitable access to hands-on engineering education — giving students at any institution the ability to interact with real hardware through a browser, without needing a physical lab.

What Redtail Offers

The Redtail repository includes simulations for embedded systems and digital design courses, connected to real remotely accessible hardware. Each simulation comes with lab exercises and documentation that instructors can use as-is or adapt for their own courses. Redtail supports undergraduate instruction, hybrid and online lab delivery, and serves as a reference implementation for integrating simulations with real hardware.

Collaborating Institutions

Redtail is being developed and evaluated in partnership with a growing network of universities and community colleges in the U.S. and internationally. Current collaborators include Sacramento State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, Western Washington University, and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AAST) in Egypt. Collaborating institutions use Redtail simulations in their courses and provide feedback that shapes the direction of the project.

Funding

Redtail is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant #2336745.
